In honor of Bailey's birthday I would like to make a plea to all of the animal lovers out there. Bailey is a rescue dog. We adopted him through Beagles of New England States, a non-profit, all volunteer, rescue organization. I have a button with a link to their website on my right sidebar. He was estimated to be about 7 months old when we made the commitment to become his forever family and bring him to his forever home. There was not a lot known about his first months, other than he was dumped at the pound in a city in MA known for being pretty rough. Luckily the angels from BONES took him in, which made it possible for us to be connected with him. The day we were going to visit him in his foster home we were told he was a very shy dog and took quite a while to warm up to new people. Within a minute of us being in the house he came right to us and curled up against our legs. It was meant to be!

The point I am getting at is this: whether you are a dog person or cat person, please please please consider a rescue or shelter pet. There are so many dogs and cats out there in shelters and foster programs just waiting for their forever homes. And there are, unfortunately, thousands more wandering the streets or in abusive situations. Thank God for programs like BONES and other breed-specific rescues, no-kill shelters, and larger welfare organizations such as the ASPCA!!!

Those of you that are pet people know there is nothing like the unconditional love of a loyal dog or a faithful cat. And I guarantee you...GUARANTEE!!!...the love you will get from a pet you rescue will be like nothing else!!! For every day of their life they will show how much it means to them that you saved them!!! They will love you forever...unconditionally!!!

(*tear*) Ah, that was beautifully written! I love hearing your bonding story with Bailey! Love it!

Thank you for sharing that! I agree with everything! Chris and I can completely relate in the fact that we have 8 rescue cats. Yeap, you got the official number out of me... but mention it to anyone and I will deny it! Cats just pick us and we just can't say no. lol but we wouldn't have it any other way! Really!!!

Happy birthday to Bailey!

Happy Birthday to your gorgeous Bailey!!!! :) :) :) He is SO precious and I just adore that you celebrated his birthday with a cupcake and candles. How adorable. :)

I also LOVE what you wrote about adopting or getting pups/cats from rescue groups. It is so so SO important to adopt. A rescue/adopted dog will love you more than you can ever imagine. :)

HAPPY BIRTHDAY BAILEY!!! You just brought tears to my eyes. There is NOTHING like the unconditional love of a dog or a cat. I am a firm believer in adopting rescues. You gave Bailey a chance and look at all Bailey has given to you. Unconditional love!!!

I knew I liked you Kristen!!! Plus, we are SO alike! I make something for Harley's birthday. I sing to him and get him a balloon each year. I am just that much of a nerd. LOL

Happy Birthday Bailey! Only ONE cupcake?? He looks like he wants more.

Great posts about rescue animals. So many people think animals are disposable which alternately breaks my heart and makes me angry.

I have never gotten a dog or cat from a pound but I would consider it. Lucy was a rescue of sorts from a client who was getting rid of her. She is the luckiest dog on earth and I tell her so regularly but we were so fortunate to find her, too.

Thanks, everyone, for the good wishes for Bailey's birthday! And, yes, I do read them to him!!! :-)

Happy Birthday to Bailey. He is one pampered pooch - those tongue pictures crack me up; he was really enjoying the festivities :D

We do not currently have any pets - but if we do it will definitely be a rescue - somewhere down the road. Right now just one kid who keeps us plenty busy.

Thank you for your kind words about him on my blog post today :-)

Happy Birthday, Bailey!

All of our dogs were from SPCA. I don't believe in spending lots of money buying dogs when there is so many of them needing good home.

Our last one SODA Girl died from epileptic seizure Christmas 08 at the age of 5. I think my boys are ready for a new friend.

Hi Kristen- A little late but hear goes : Happy Birthday to you, Happy Birthday to you, Happy Birthday dear Bailey... Happy Birthday to you!
He is just the dearest dog and you can tell how much he is loved! We have rescued 1 Husky mix at 6 years of age and he was the best dog ever- we lost him at 15 yrs due to his hips and old age- miss him terribly. When the time is right, we will rescue another dog at the local shelter. -Karen

Kristen you are AWESOME for posting on this important subject!

Chestnut was a teeny stray kitten found in our own backyard six years ago. I feel the same way you do! It's so important to our special fur babies to be found in shelters and taken home for good.

~Happy Birthday Bailey!~ :)

Your dog is so cute! I love the pictures, and your story of how Baily came to be a part of your family.
I'm dropping by from WOW, and congrats on your BON day!

We always had beagles when I was growing up and they are the sweetest dogs ever. Bailey is adorable and he sure did love his cupcake. On a more serious note, thanks for reminding us all to consider rescue organizations when we want to add pets to our family.

You are my kind of people! We always celebrate our Boston Terrier's birthday, and we celebrate our Pug's "gotcha day," since he's a rescue (YAY rescue!) and we don't know his birthday.

He's so cute! I didn't even know you could get cakes for dogs....

What a great post! He is such a cutie!

I work with animals and think rescue animals are the best. There are so many places that people can go to and find rescued dogs, even puppies or purebreds if that is was they are looking for. It is important the people know there are options other than breeders (which I am personally not a fan of!)

tori said...

here from WOW. I think you did a great job promoting the animal rescue. We got our first dog 5 months ago from a breeder because I was so afraid of getting a "damaged" or "untrainable" dog. SO naive! Now that I have a dog and spend tons of time at our local dog park, I have met so many wonderful rescue dogs, I realize how silly that kind of thinking is. I'm hoping to someday add to our family a rescue (I just have to convince the hubby) :)

Great pictures! I love dogs! Can't say the same for cats (but I don't wish them any harm). We have been considering getting a dog but not sure when. I will definitely be going to a shelter, especially after Oprah talked about it a while back. Happy belated Bailey!
