onions, romaine lettuce
I know it has been a while since my last update but the truth is there hasn't been much to tell. I am not happy with the progress of our garden this year. :( I have mentioned in previous posts that, although we have a large yard, most of it is shaded. We have very limited space that gets sun. It turns out that the space we plant in was getting more sun last year than this year. What I didn't anticipate is that the closest very large tree actually grew and spread even more. Things are growing, but when I compared pictures from this time last year to what it looks like this year, it was a bit disappointing. So, we are already thinking ahead to next year and we have a plan brewing of how we can not only have a larger garden but have it in pretty much the one corner of our yard that gets sun almost all day!
But that is next year and this update is about what is happening right now. So here are a few pics!
zucchini, cukes, and a row of tomatoes
You can see in the above picture that the zucchini and cukes are doing ok. We do have a lot of blossoms, and we seem to be doing ok in keeping then within their supports so that they don't spread all over the place. The tomatoes, well, those are making me sad. The tallest plant you see is the cherry tomatoes, which we actually the tomatoes that did best for us last year, too. The other two plants, the roma and celebrity, are not maturing too well. The roma, actually, does have two green tomatoes on it! Now we just have to see if they grow and ripen.
cubanelle peppers
Our peppers on the other hand are our superstars of Garden 2010!!! All of our plants are producing well. Not quite ready to pick yet, but we should have quite a bounty of peppers!!!
hot peppers whose name escapes me at the moment...
I didn't get any pictures yet of the bell peppers and jalapenos but those are looking great, too!
Kevin picking some romaine lettuce
first harvest!
We enjoyed the first romaine we picked in a yummy salad yesterday with homemade dressing that utilized our fresh basil!
Speaking of basil, all of my herbs are doing great except for my cilantro. It went to seed so fast, before I could actually use any of it. I didn't know that happens with cilantro. I do know the seeds of the cilantro plant are actually coriander so I need to do some research to see if I can salvage the plant as coriander or not.
That is about it for now!

I mentioned you on my blog!
I have problems with cilantro, too. Don't worry about the progress of your garden, it has been a wet year and everyone's is behind some. At least of the hobby gardeners!
That salad looks good!! I need to get your recipe for homemade salad dressing! :)
Sorry your garden is not turning out as you had hoped! It is such a learning experience though, isn't it? I try to remember to write down what worked each year and what didn't. Your peppers look great!
I didn't know that about coriander! I hope your garden kicks out a little more for the rest of the summer!
